ambient_generic

just thought i'd throw out some random knowledge on ambient_generic. might be common knowledge but i hope it will be useful to some at least ;)

ambient_generic is great for custom sounds and music! custom sounds and music should be put in ur: "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\~account name~\counter-strike source\cstrike\sound" folder. if the sound folder does not exist in ur cstrike folder, simply just create one and name it "sound". sounds should be in either .wave or .mp3 format with a suggested sample rate of 44.1khz and 16bit sample format. (to be honest, i have had my settings much different with satisfactory results, so just see what works for u) of course .wav are quite large in file size even at minimal length/duration, but cue points can be added for looping a sound using a free program called goldwave. (looping can only be achieved with .wav format) u can find goldwave for download at the link below.

http://www.download.com/GoldWave/3000-2 ... d=10804034

to add a cue point in goldwave, load ur sound, go to tools>cue points. everything from there should be pretty self explanatory.

if looping is not an issue for ur sound, mp3 is the way to go, and audacity will work just fine for saving ur sound with the properties u desire (goldwave and audacity work for setting sound prefs). link below.

http://www.download.com/Audacity/3000-2 ... d=10606824

make sure when selecting ur sound in the actual ambient generic entity, u have the "sound type" set to "RAW" rather than the default "game sounds" option.

finally, to pack the sound with ur .bsp, download pakrat. pakrat is a very simple tool to use, so i wont get into that. link below.

http://pakrat.fragland.net/releases/PakRatb1.sit

if u have worked with entities at all before, the rest of the ambient_generic options should be pretty easy to understand. if i have left anything out or u have anything to add, feel free to do so. any other question, lemme know!

Re: ambient_generic

I dont know what the hell Im doing wrong. Im trying to add sounds to hl2. I go into my directory (C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\steamname\half-life 2\hl2\sound) and I put my .wav or .mp3 in there. However, in game, in the console it says that it cant find the file when I trigger it. I have multiple files, both .wav and .mp3 but they still wont work >:(

Any advice?

Re: ambient_generic

Your mapping in HL2, right?
And are you playing HL2?
Or G-MOD?
Make a copy for both, same with materials.

I would use .mp3.
Sometimes in hammer, you can't preview your sound, but it still should work.
Maybe fixed by now. I haven't used my own sound in long time.
Mainly because NIC said he didn't like my music. :t3razz:

Meh, Don't worry I'm not spying on you. I'm quite sure you can play anything you like without me knowing.
And I've only heard like 2 songs anyway, I hope you have more music then that. :o
