Got a song in my head and it wants out.

.
Well I woke up this morning with a beautiful piece of music in my head. I cant tell if it's from a song I heard or if I thought it up all on my own...
But anyway, I'm looking for a composing program so that I can make a song note by note with whatever insterments I want.
Preferably freeware or free trail.

P.S. And I need someone to tell me where the Firefox spell check dictionary is because I keep accidentally adding words to it's "Correctly Spelled" list.

'Logic Pro 8' is excellent, I had a chance to use it on a course a while back. Expensive (!!!), but there might be a free trail around. FL Studio is meant to be good. I know Logic Pro 8 comes preloaded with sounds, I think FL Studio does too...

Aww man, I found the song. Guess I was thinking of a song after all.
I had the beginning part in my head, note for note.

Now I'm tempted to recreate it and take a totally different spin off of the beginning... seeing as how I cant sing. :t3razz:
Thanks, I'll look Logic Pro 8 later on to day and give it a try.

I started out on Jeskola Buzz which is a pretty cool music making program. And everything about it is free!

I don't know if you've ever used trackers before, so there may be a slight learning curve. But once you figure out the basics it's pretty easy to use. It's a little buggy since it was made prior to XP being really common, but generally won't break with general use.

He doesn't want an audio editing program, he knows what Audacity is. He means one that is preloaded with tunes, you know, has lot's of preloaded notes in it that he can mix up / compose stuff.

Re: Got a song in my head and it wants out.

well, if you actually want to "compose" music for real, you should take a look at Finale Notepad, it's a simple program that allows you to create music note - for - note. It's free, and is meant as a sketch pad for larger programs, such as Finale 2009.

If you're looking for something for free, don't expect much more than a sketch pad equivalent, because anything with any considerable worth will make you pay for it.

typically, if you use demos of some "music making" (more like music copy and pasting) programs (like the FL Studio demo, or Garageband, etc) it won't allow you to save the file you're working on. There are some workarounds, but they take effort.

If you find that Notepad doesn't seem to fit, you can check out a Sibelius demo, or you can take a gander at www.myriad-online.com

Melody / Harmony assistant is a very user friendly program I bought 5 years ago as my first program, and it's extremely versatile for the cash.

Hope that helps!

Re: Got a song in my head and it wants out.

Are there are music composing programs that don't rely on MIDI to playback sounds? Seems like all the ones I come across don't even have any VST or Soundfont options.

Kind of thread hijacking...

Re: Got a song in my head and it wants out.

yes, almost any/every music composing program can be augmented with VST sound fonts.

the two most popular are Finale and Sibelius, however, pretty much anything can be haxed into working with VST's.

the reason why they (companies) don't mention it specifically is because sound fonts cost anywhere from $200 - $3,500 and are sold separately from different companies.

these programs are then installed and integrated with the composition program.

the only catch is that VST's most commonly use some type of "player," that is, a program which handles all of the sounds through the composition program, so the actual program doesn't have to do any of the work.

here is a link to a site with some free VST's

http://www.audiomastermind.com/browse-f ... 988-1.html

and here are a couple links to very high quality samples:

http://www.soundsonline.com/home.php

http://www.dv247.com/invt/51494/

hope it helps.

Re: Got a song in my head and it wants out.

I use Acoustica Mixcraft. It's a bit like garage band, in that it's more centered around recording yourself than composing, but you can also pick from hundreds of instruments and compose note by note. It is pretty easy to use if you're willing to spend just an hour or so learning the interface and everything.

it also doesn't cost $200. version 4 is $64.95 on their website.
